The mission of the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Department (CDE) is to advance the health of the public by promoting a research-based approach to the prevention and management of chronic disease, and to educate future leaders of the field. The department aims to enhance understanding about the determinants of chronic diseases in populations and how to intervene most effectively to reduce morbidity and mortality due to chronic diseases. In the Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology, emphasis is placed on the fields of cancer, cardiovascular disease, perinatal and reproductive epidemiology, psychosocial epidemiology, HIV/AIDS, aging and genetic epidemiology. The department's Social and Behavioral Sciences Program focuses on psychosocial and behavioral interventions and women's health research.
