Biography

Sonya graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. John’s University where she received a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology as well as minor certificates in Chemistry and Philosophy in 1997. She went on to earn her M.D. degree in 2001 from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. As a medical student, she was the recipient of the Clyde B. Randall Award for best thesis in obstetrics and gynecology. Sonya remained at SUNY Buffalo for her Ob/Gyn residency where she was the recipient of several teaching awards and the Robert J. Patterson Memorial Award for Patient Care.

Sonya then came to Yale as a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellow from 2005 – 2008 and received the Jose Asis Memorial Teaching Award during that time. Upon completion of her fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Sonya entered fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care and Surgical Emergencies from 2008 – 2009 at Yale University. During that time, she has pursued research interests in maternal and fetal inflammation and has also become involved in the evaluation and prognosis of renal disease in the critically ill.
